Uh oh… Patrick is bored in school again

Here’s a problem. I found some of Patrick’s homework on the computer. Parents need to pay attention to their children’s work apparently.

Reflection Questions for Close Reading Activity
Directions: Type a thorough response under each of the following questions.
1. Approaching Texts: Am I aware of my purpose for reading? Yes or No. Why?
Yes. I’ve been learning this section, haven’t I?
2. Questioning Texts
a) I begin my reading with questions to help me understand the text. Yes or No. Why?
No. I start reading the text by reading the text. I don’t read the first and last paragraph and go “What does this text say?”
b) I annotate the text marking details that relate to my guiding questions. Yes or No. Why?
No, I don’t have any guiding questions, because I start reading the text instead of asking questions that I have no idea how to come up with.
c) I pose new questions while reading that help me deepen my understanding. Yes or No. Why?
I pose questions like “why did he do that? What did that have to do with his predicament?” not “How does this part of the text relate to my life?” So I pose questions, but not those types of questions
3. Over the course of this mission of “Close Reading”, what area can I improve as a reader?
I can improve on the area of understanding the weird units my language arts teacher has me go through because this entire section makes no sense.
