The American dream…and other fallacies

To my wife Lisa on Valentine’s Day 2005

Tempting Fate

If I had the chance to do it all again I’d have to think,
‘cause life is like a recipe for a side dish or a drink,
and making just one minor change in earnest or in haste,
could wreck the meal you’re making and end up in a waste.

But…
if I had the chance to to it all again I wouldn’t wait,
I’d be the one to venture forth and ask YOU for a date,
but maybe this time when I lie upon that couch and fret,
the one thing I would try to change is my amount of sweat.

And…
if I had the chance to do it all again I do not feel,
that changing things would add to the excitement (or the zeal,)
that being with you brought to me for 16 years gone by,
(which passed not very slowly, but in the blinking of an eye.)

Yes…
if I had the chance to do it all again, I couldn’t say,
why I’d do anything that that wouldn’t put us here today.
Yes we are in a place now where our hearts are full of pureness,
and tempting fate by changing things would introduce unsureness.

So…
if I had the chance to do it all again I wouldn’t care,
to wonder how our lives would be if we were not a pair,
or delve into the possibility of being alone,
a thought that when I think of it can chill me to the bone.

And…
if I had the chance to do it all again my choice would be,
to have a boy named Patrick and a girl, Emily,
for those are names that bring to life the comfort and the joy,
of memories of raising our girl and then our boy.

Yes!
if I had the chance to turn back time and start at our begining,
I know that you and I would be the ones who would be winning,
for on that day I made the leap and offered you a ring,
I knew from that day forward that I wouldn’t change a thing.

Happy Valentines Day.
I love you,

–Steve

Lisa’s reply…Never one to be outdone, Lisa surprised me with this morning mirror message: “Happy Valentine’s! You’re looking at the man I love! Love always & forever, your loving wife.”

No shortage of love there, only a shortage of leftover lipstick.

Reading this 5 years later, I feel I owe it to the readers to explain that when we first started dating, Lisa asked ME out and most of what she remembers about that first night watching a movie at my house is how much I sweated on the couch.
